YMCA to Host 33rd Heritage Run

The YMCA of Rock River Valley is hosting the 33rd Annual YMCA Heritage Run presented by OSF Healthcare on April 23 in downtown Rockford. The annual race historically draws between 400-500 runners. The long-standing event raises awareness and funds for community outreach and mentoring programs at the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

The Y is proud of the impact it has had on youth and teens in the community, extending its reach to more than 16 thousand. Nearly 300 teens are active in Project 505, giving back more than eight thousand teen volunteer hours. We serve youth through our Kids’ Time before and after school program, Walking School Bus, RAISE and Achievers mentoring programs, Teen Centers and more.

“The Y is only able to impact the lives of youth with the support of our community,” said Andre Anthony, Executive Director of Youth Achievement YMCA. “Events like the Heritage Run allow us to carry out an important tradition in our community, while helping those who need us most.”

This year’s YMCA Heritage Run features a 10k and 2-mile race, a 2-mile family run/walk, and new this year, a half-mile family color run. The race is broken up into age groups for the 10k and 2-mile races starting at 6 - 8 and going to 75 and over. There are cash awards for top winners.

This is an event for the entire family. Free youth activities will be provided at the BMO Harris Bank parking lot. Activities will be carnival themed and will include face painting and balloon art, healthy cakewalk, basketball shoot out, and much more! Home Depot will also be joining us to lead a DIY Kids Workshop where the children will make something they will be able to take home. New this year – drop-in childcare will be provided at no charge for youth ages 5-12 with parent participation in the race.

Heritage Run's 10k and 2-mile races are both part of the Rockford Road Runners race circuit. To learn more about the Rockford Road Runners, visit their website www.rockfordroadrunners.org.
