Judson University Unveils New Rockford Campus Within the YMCA

After six months of construction, Judson University unveils its new Rockford campus, which is housed within the I.D. Pennock Family YMCA (200 Y Boulevard) in downtown Rockford, Ill. Judson administrators and YMCA of Rock River Valley leaders celebrated at a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 26, at 1 p.m.
The YMCA and Judson are two Christian-based organizations that have found a unique way to share space for the benefit of both organizations, members and students. The newly renovated 10,000 square-foot space on the third floor of this flagship Y has been transformed into multiple classrooms, study spaces and office space. The new classrooms offer current adult students and Y members an opportunity to take evening college courses within Judson’s Division of Professional Studies; plus,
“Adult students face many challenges to earn a degree. Our partnership with the YMCA will eliminate some of those, such as how to find child care, how to stay physically fit so they have the energy to study, and a convenient time and location so they can continue to work while they progress toward their degree,” said Judson Dean David Cook. “This partnership of mind, body, and spirit will be a winning formula for the adult learners in the Rockford area.”
The Y also has access to these state-of-the-art facilities during the day to run its Elevate GED program, YMCA trainings and other education-based programs. The establishment of this partnership marks the latest initiative of surrounding businesses to join together and create continued revitalization in downtown Rockford.
“Our vision was to create a place where members, students and residents can go to become a stronger version of themselves – whether its through fitness, education or family time,” said Mike Brown, CEO, YMCA of Rock River Valley. “We believe Judson University is the perfect partner to help us achieve this goal. It allows both organizations to expand offerings, which is a win for YMCA members and Judson students.”
Fall classes begin at Judson’s new campus on July 31, 2017.
Judson students have the added benefit of having access to childcare during class time, complimentary use of the fitness facilities and an on-site Subway sandwich shop to grab a quick bite.
