YMCA Kicks Off 6th Annual Intern Challenge

The hottest job in the region is up for grabs as the YMCA of Rock River Valley kicks off its sixth annual YMCA Intern Challenge. Of the nearly 70 applicants, 16 have been selected to participate in the 2017 Intern Challenge. The participants will meet and accept their first-round challenge on June 12 at Camp Winnebago YMCA. Camp Winnebago and Midland State Bank have partnered to sponsor week one in which the students will be raising funds for the Annual Campaign and doing a service project to celebrate Camp Winnebago’s 50th anniversary.

The YMCA Intern Challenge started in 2012 as a way to approach mentorship and training of the younger generation in our community. The challenge has grown in popularity each year – attracting high school and college students from the region. Each week, a contestant is eliminated and the remaining contestants will have the opportunity to win a college scholarship and a paid internship with the YMCA of Rock River Valley.  There are scholarships for second and third place as well as chances to win weekly bonuses.

Our 2017 sponsors include BMO Harris Bank, Midland State Bank, YMCA Camping Services, Rockford IceHogs, Schmeling Contstuction/Goldie B. Floberg Center, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Rockford Public Schools 205, Rockford University, FUELZ, Illinois Bank and Trust, Revival Tech Repair, Trotter Manufacturing, Thayer Lighting and Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

Since its inception, participants in the YMCA Intern Challenge have given more than 6,000 hours to local businesses and organizations and raised more than $15,000. More information about the YMCA Intern Challenge can be found at: www.ymcainternchallenge.com.
