America’s Got Talent Musician to Headline YMCA Dinner

The YMCA of Rock River Valley is excited to announce singer-songwriter Mandy Harvey will be the featured speaker at the YMCA Community Dinner presented by Illinois Bank and Trust on March 5, 2020 at Giovanni’s Restaurant and Convention Center.  Harvey, who is deaf, wowed the judges on American’s Got Talent in 2017. In fact, she was Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer Winner.

Her message is universal…Hope, Dream, Believe, no matter what. A Vocal Music Education major at Colorado State University, Harvey lost her residual hearing at age eighteen due to a connective tissue disorder, and left the program. She pursued several career options, including education, but returned to music. As an Ambassador for No Barriers USA, she travels the country to heighten awareness, break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and lead the charge toward a brighter future for all. Though her hearing loss is profound, her timing, pitch and passion are perfect.

“Mandy’s story of not giving up on her dream regardless of her loss of hearing is so inspiring,” said Michelle Gorham, Chief Advancement Officer, YMCA of Rock River Valley. “We are all talented in our own ways and sometimes just need a support system to achieve our dreams. That is what the Y strives to provide to its members. This message speaks to us and we can’t wait to share it with our community.”

The Y turns no one away for their ability to pay. We are only able to do this because of generous donations given to our annual campaign. The Y will be kicking off its 2020 annual campaign at the dinner with a goal of raising $1.3 million. Gifts to the annual campaign go directly to programs that serve those with the greatest need in our community – helping to close the achievement gap, keeping kids in school, and preventing childhood obesity. Funds provide financial assistance for membership, camp and a variety of programs.

The dinner also offers three scholarship opportunities for individuals pursuing a college education. The Antonio Little Teen Leadership Award will provide two $1,000 scholarships to local teens. Additionally, the Y and Judson University will award a 2-year, fully funded scholarship in the adult professional program.
