The YMCA of Rock River Valley and Harlem Community Center (HCC) today announced their intent to merge effective October 1, bringing two longtime community organizations together to strengthen and expand services for children, families, and individuals throughout the region.
The boards of directors of both organizations have approved the merger. The organizations are now working through the transition of staff, technology, financial systems and other operations to the YMCA of Rock River Valley in preparation for the formal merger.
Harlem Community Center has been a community cornerstone for decades, providing Hand-N-Hand Childcare Center, Heart of the Parks Early Learning Center, HCC Kids Fun Club, camps, school’s out days, before- and after-school care, youth and family events, active older adult programming, and youth sports. HCC participants and families will continue to have access to the programs they know and value, while gaining access to additional YMCA benefits, resources and opportunities.
“This is an exciting next step for Harlem Community Center and the communities we serve,” said Jason Blume, HCC Board Chair. “Our board has been thoughtful about the future of HCC and what will best position the organization to continue serving local families. Joining with the YMCA allows us to preserve the programs and relationships that make HCC special while creating new opportunities and greater long-term sustainability.”
The YMCA began overseeing operations at HCC in February 2026 under a management agreement with an intent to merge. Since that time, the organizations have worked together to better understand operations, identify opportunities to share resources, and develop a path toward becoming one organization.
“We have long talked about a YMCA presence in Machesney Park, and this merger creates an incredible opportunity to build on what HCC has already established,” said Melissa Burns, VP of Membership Operations, YMCA of Rock River Valley. “There is so much history, pride and community connection here. We are excited to bring the best of both organizations forward.”
The merger will allow the newly combined organization to leverage shared resources, expertise and infrastructure while continuing to focus on the needs of local families.

The partnership and pending merger have been supported by the City of Loves Park and Village of Machesney Park. The Village of Machesney Park and the YMCA have been in discussions for several years about the possibility of establishing a YMCA presence in the community.
