The YMCA of Rock River Valley has launched a renovation project to expand the fitness center at the Northeast Family YMCA. The facility, which is located at 8451 Orth Road in Loves Park, will add 4,000 square feet of space and provide 24-hour access to members.
The Y is taking over the space formerly occupied by UW Health physical therapy on the front of the building. Walls will be removed to connect the two spaces and provide an open flow. New flooring and additional equipment will be added, including a new EGYM Smart Circuit. The Y was the first fitness center in the region to introduce EGYM at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront Y. It’s a comprehensive training option that takes the guesswork out of exercise. EGYM smart circuit machines automatically adjust to the user’s custom settings for weight, range of motion and cardiovascular exercise. Users are guided through a full-body workout in as little as 20 minutes.
The $800,000 investment also includes new plate-loaded strength equipment including six half racks with platforms for heavy lifting with bumper plates, an additional leg press and chest press, and new pieces to this location including a hack squat, glute drive, leg press, and seated calf machines.
The Northeast Y will continue to have the same hours of operation, but will soon allow members to access the fitness center overnight with upgraded membership.
“We tested this model at the Puri Family YMCA and it is working great,” said Melissa Burns, VP of Operations. “We know our members are seeking a healthy lifestyle, but their schedule doesn’t always align with our hours. This new benefit will hopefully remove barriers for Y members and allow them to focus on their wellbeing when it works best for them.”
The Northeast Family YMCA opened in 2007. This will be the first major renovation that aims to increase amenities for existing members while attracting new families.
“Our cardio and weight rooms are one of the highest used areas in the Y and we noticed members were having to wait to use equipment,” said Becca Homb, Executive Director. “This investment allows us to better serve our members, while making space for potential new members.”
Schmeling Construction and 1919 Architects are leading the project. Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of January.
