Adult Sports

Game on! YMCA Adult Sports programs offer fun ways for men and women to stay active, get fit and explore new hobbies. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or just looking to explore a new hobby, we have something for you - basketball, tae kwon do, pickleball, rock climbing, swimming, adult swim lessons and more!

Participants 16 and older work in small groups with an instructor to meet individual goals for water comfort and skill development. Group interaction encourages personal growth, skill development, and fun. 

Adult Level 1/2
Perfect for the student not comfortable going under water or floating on their front and back. Students work on water acclimation, developing comfort with underwater discovery, and entering and exiting the water. Students then work on water movement, focusing on body position, directional change, and forward movement. 

Adult Level 3/4
This level is great for the intermediate adult swimmer who wants to improve stamina and stroke skills. Register

Whether you just want to shoot some hoops or practive drills, our basketball hoops are open for reservations at the Northeast and SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCAs. Game play is now allowed, but masks must be worn at all times. You must bring your own ball. Reserve a Hoop

Racquetball will be available on courts 4, 5 and 6 at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. Advanced registration is required by both players. Click to learn more and secure your timeslot.

Items to note:
*4 players maximum per court.
*ALL players need to be pre-registered. If you call, our team can help with signing up another player, OR you can individually register online. This is for capacity/court space reasons, but also required by state law.
*45-minute time slots are available.
*Please wear a facial covering when entering, exiting or while in common areas. You do NOT need to wear it while exercising. 
*Bring a water bottle. Drinking fountains are for bottle filling only.
*You will be asked screening questions when you arrive

Reserve a lap lane at our SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA for a 45-minute timeslot in the North (warm water) or South (cool water) pool, or at the Northeast Family YMCA. Lanes can be used for lap swimming, water walking or therapeutic exercise.
 
Up to four family members from the same household may share a lane with one reservation. Independent swimming for ages 16 and up. Ages 8-15 may lap swim with a parent on deck supervising. This is for active YMCA of Rock River Valley members only. Advanced reservations are required.  Reserve

For swimmers over age 18 who want to work out with other adults on a regular basis with coach guidance. Swim to compete, work on your technique, or just for fun and exercise. 

The Master's Swim Team participates in various events such as open water swim events, USMS sanctioned swim events, and local invitationals. Open to anyone and everyone! No prior experience required.

Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Players use solid paddles made of wood or composite material to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to wiffleball, over a net. 

Pickleball is available at the Northeast Family YMCA and SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA locations. A maximum of four players per court will be allowed. Reservations are not required. Click HERE to see the schedule for pickleball open play.

Looking to improve strength, flexibility, and toughness during the summer? Then we are looking for you! Rowing is an ideal cross-training sport that improves strength, endurance, and flexibility with little risk of injury. The Rockford YMCA Rowing Crew offers both Masters and High School aged youth classes to all who are interested in learning to row. Learn More

Looking to scale new heights – take on our 22-foot indoor climbing wall located at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. We have varying degrees of difficulty to challenge everyone from beginner to advanced skill levels. We welcome you during open climb times - reservations are not required.

Saturdays 10am-2pm

*Adults only Mondays & Thursdays 6-7pm

Beginner & Intermediate Climbing Classes are offered on Wednesday evenings starting in January. Register

Learn and practice the art of self-defense over the course of 4 weeks. New sessions start monthly. Participants will learn the following:

How to avoid an encounter that could lead to an attack
Where to strike to disable an attacker
How to escape a choke or hold and subdue an attacker 
Simple and effective kicks and strikes 
Martial arts experience is not required. Class is taught by Master Victor Fong, 6th Degree Black Belt with over 35 years experience teaching martial arts. 

Classes are held on Thursdays from 11-11:55am at our Northeast Family YMCA. Register for Classes

Tae Kwon Do training at the YMCA provides many benefits including: self-discipline, character building, self-esteem, physical fitness, stress relief and self-defense training. Women in our classes also learn specialized self-defense techniques. Register for Classes
