Downtown Fitness Center Expansion Opens

July 8, 2024

Following nine months of construction, the YMCA of Rock River Valley unveils its new fitness center expansion at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. The two-story, 9,000-square-foot addition doubles the size of the fitness center. Members cut the ribbon at 5 a.m. on July 8, 2024 to officially open the space.

The center features mostly new equipment including 50 pieces of cardio equipment, a functional training space on turf – similar to what is available at the Northeast Family YMCA, additional plate-loaded items, and squat racks with bumper plates and platforms.

Additionally, the Y is proud to be the first fitness center in the region to introduce EGYM, a comprehensive training option that takes the guesswork out of exercise. EGYM smart circuit machines automatically adjust to the user’s custom settings for weight, range of motion and cardiovascular exercise. Users are guided through a full-body workout in as little as 20 minutes.

The Y has seen a drastic increase in membership. Expanding the fitness center will help alleviate overcrowding.

“Our cardio and weight rooms are one of the highest used areas in the Y and we noticed members were having to wait to use equipment,” said Rachel Robinson, add title. “We are excited to offer new amenities to help motivate and inspire members to achieve their health and wellness goals.”

The $3 million investment is part of the first phase of a $15-$20 million capital campaign to elevate our YMCA association. The project would not be possible without many generous donors, including lead donors Rick and Lana Engen. Schmeling Construction and 1919 Architects have also been valuable partners on the project.

“Capital campaigns are more a marathon than a sprint and that has been very true in the case of our association-wide improvements,” said Michelle Gorham, CFRE, Chief Advancement Officer. “This exciting fitness expansion is one of the many meaningful projects that will begin to take shape as funds are available to complete them, including additional work at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA and a significant renovation at Good Shepherd YMCA, our new location expected to open this fall on North Rockton Avenue.”

The Y will continue fundraising efforts to bring more plans to fruition in an effort to continue to meet the needs of the people in our community.
