The YMCA of Rock River Valley proudly announces the grand opening of its newly renovated Kids’ Care Center at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA, 200 Y Boulevard in Rockford. The new Kids’ Care is a vibrant, imaginative, and nurturing space designed to support youth development and provide peace of mind for parents.
The unveiling marks the completion of a $750,000 renovation project, made possible through a partnership with Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois and the introduction of The Excel Center at the Y – a tuition-free high school for adults. With the Excel Center now offering educational opportunities upstairs, the YMCA responded with a vision to upgrade its childcare space below.
“We are in love with this new area and can’t wait to see the facial expressions as little ones arrive next week,” said Rachel Robinson, Executive Director, SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. “We believe all people thrive in environments that inspire. We are eager to see imagination come to life as they go camping, construct a project, create artwork, or visit the store.”Designed to spark creativity, encourage learning through play, and promote social-emotional growth, the new space ensures that children are actively engaged while their parents participate in YMCA programs or attend classes at the Excel Center.
The Kids’ Care entrance moved to the main lobby to make it more convenient for families, and includes an accessible ramp. The transformation began in May, when the Kids’ Care team moved into temporary spaces to allow renovations to begin. They will now return to a space that reflects the care, creativity, and community spirit for which the YMCA stands.
“We know that a lack of childcare can be a major barrier for adults pursuing their high school diploma,” added Ben Bernsten, President of Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. “With the opening of The Excel Center and the partnership with the Y on this space, we’ve helped remove that barrier. Parents now have a safe, engaging place for their children while they work toward a better future.”
The YMCA extends its appreciation to the partners and professionals who made this transformation possible: 1919 Architects, Schmeling Construction, Mixdesign, Entre Computer Solutions, and the YMCA Kids’ Care and facilities teams.
